Wheako Kai means dining experience in Maori. It is a sensory-rich and story-based dining experience that has been designed for a futuristic context. A context in which people have made the transition to a completely unique and personal diet containing only the pure nutrients their body needs in powdered form. With the powders originating from labs and having very little textural differences, a lack of connection with the origin of the food and a lack of sensory experience arises. Therefore, the design consists of a restaurant-based dining experience in which connections to mythical origins of the food are made. Wheako Kai brings its guests a unique and immersive experience. However, the bigger goal of the design is to trigger thought and debate concerning the desirability of such a future and our current connection to our food’s origin.
